The iPad 7th Generation, also known as the iPad 10.2-inch from 2019, was a popular model when it first came out. But now that we’re in 2024, is it still worth buying? Let’s take a closer look.

Design and Display

The iPad 7th Generation features a 10.2-inch display, which was the first time Apple increased the screen size from previous models. While the display is decent, it’s not as advanced as the ones you see in modern iPads like the iPad Pro. The thick bezels and the physical home button make it look a bit outdated by today’s standards, especially when compared to newer models with edge-to-edge screens.

Still, if you don’t mind the older design, the iPad 7th Generation offers a sturdy build with its aluminum body. It’s not flashy, but it feels solid in your hands.

Ports and Buttons

One thing to note is that this iPad still uses the Lightning port, unlike the newer models that have switched to USB-C. While the Lightning port works fine, USB-C is faster and more versatile. If you already have a lot of Lightning accessories, this might not be a dealbreaker, but it’s something to consider.

Camera Quality

The camera on the iPad 7th Generation is nothing special. It has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front camera, which are similar to the cameras on older iPhones like the iPhone 6. These cameras are okay for video calls or quick photos, but they aren’t great for high-quality photography. If you need a device with a good camera, this iPad probably won’t meet your needs.

Software Support

The iPad 7th Generation still receives software updates, but it’s nearing the end of its update cycle. It’s unlikely to get iPadOS 18, but Apple will likely continue providing security updates for a while. So, while it’s still supported, it won’t get all the newest features that the latest iPads receive.

Performance

Powered by the A10 Fusion chip and 3 GB of RAM, the iPad 7th Generation offers decent performance for basic tasks like browsing, streaming, and using apps. However, it’s not the fastest iPad around. If you plan on using demanding apps or doing heavy multitasking, this iPad might feel slow compared to newer models.

Battery Life

One strong point of the iPad 7th Generation is its battery. With an 8,827 mAh battery, it offers solid battery life, lasting through a full day of moderate use. This is great if you need a device that can last a long time without needing constant charging.

Conclusion: Should You Buy It in 2024?

The iPad 7th Generation is still a decent option for light users who need an affordable iPad for simple tasks. However, for most people, it’s better to go for a newer model like the iPad 9th Generation. The iPad 9 offers better performance, a more modern design, and is not much more expensive.

If you can find the iPad 7th Generation at a very low price and only need it for basic tasks, it might be worth considering. But overall, the iPad 9th Generation is a much better choice in 2024.
