The iPad Pro 4th Generation, released in 2020, was considered a minor upgrade compared to the 2018 model. As we approach 2024, many wonder if this iPad is still a good purchase. Let’s take a closer look at its features and performance to see if it’s worth buying today.

Design and Display

The iPad Pro 4th Generation came in two sizes: 11-inch and 12.9-inch. It features a beautiful IPS LCD display with a high-resolution of 1668 x 2388 and a 120Hz refresh rate. This gives the screen smooth motion and great brightness (up to 600 nits). While not a huge leap from the 2018 model, the display still looks stunning even in 2024.

The tablet has a sleek design with flat sides and a small bezel around the screen. It also supports USB-C for charging and connecting accessories, although it lacks Thunderbolt support. The iPad Pro 4th Generation remains modern-looking compared to newer iPads.

Camera and Lidar

On the back, the iPad Pro 4th Generation introduced a dual-camera system. It includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 10-megapixel ultra-wide camera, similar to the iPhone 11 Pro. The tablet also features a lidar sensor, which enhances augmented reality (AR) experiences.

While the camera setup isn’t groundbreaking by today’s standards, it’s still capable of recording 4K videos at 60 frames per second, making it a solid option for content creators who need a portable device with a good camera.

Performance

The iPad Pro 4th Generation is powered by the A12Z Bionic chip and comes with 6GB of RAM. At the time, this chip was very powerful and could handle demanding tasks, including gaming, video editing and multitasking. Even now, the performance holds up well for most day-to-day activities.

However, compared to newer models like the M1 and M2 iPad Pros, the A12Z feels slightly outdated. If you’re planning to use it for high-end tasks, newer models might be better choices.

Longevity and Software Updates

Apple typically supports its devices with software updates for several years. The iPad Pro 4th Generation should continue receiving updates for a few more years, but it’s uncertain how long it will last. While it’s still reliable for now, the M1 and M2 iPads offer better long-term support.

Is It Still Worth Buying iPad Pro 4th Generation in 2024?

If you find the iPad Pro 4th Generation at a discounted price, it could be a good deal. It’s still a powerful and feature-packed device. However, if the price is close to the newer M1 or M2 iPads, those models are better investments due to their improved performance and future-proofing.

In conclusion, the iPad Pro 4th Generation is still a capable tablet in 2024. Its strong display, solid performance and camera system make it a good choice if you get it for a lower price. However, if you’re looking for the latest technology and long-term support, you might want to consider newer iPad models like the M1 or M2 iPad Pro.
