“Sonic 3” is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. The new installment in the series will not only bring back SEGA’s iconic blue hedgehog, Sonic, along with Tails and Knuckles, but will also feature Jim Carrey’s return as Dr. Robotnik. Additionally, Keanu Reeves will join the cast as Shadow, further exciting fans.
But what will happen after this movie? Are there any plans for more sequels beyond “Sonic 3”? During the Sonic Central event, Jeff Fowler, the director of the trilogy, and Toby Ascher, the producer, dropped hints about the possible future of the franchise.
“When you look back and see where it all started, it’s such a huge reward that we get to continue telling Sonic stories, and we never take that for granted. […] It’s such a rich story universe, I don’t see us taking our foot off the gas at all,” Ascher said, suggesting the intention to continue beyond “Sonic 3.”
However, this shouldn’t be taken as a confirmation. While nothing is official, Ascher’s comment shows that both SEGA and Paramount Pictures are eager to keep capitalizing on the popularity of the Sonic saga. After the success of the first two films, the creators of “Sonic 3” seem to have reached a point where the narrative could continue to grow, likely leading to more installments.

The introduction of Shadow has the potential to greatly enhance the story’s depth. If the team behind “Sonic 3” handles it well, it’s only natural to expect many more stories to unfold, with new characters being introduced into the Sonic universe.
Director Says “Sonic 3” Promises to Be a Treat for Fans
eff Fowler emphasized that whether or not there are more Sonic movies in the future, this year’s installment will surprise fans of the blue hedgehog. “Fans are going to lose their minds when they see what we have planned. We had great action scenes in Sonic 2, but now we’re taking it to a whole new level,” said the director of Sonic 3.
