It’s time to review the many spin-off series from the post-apocalyptic franchise The Walking Dead, originally based on Robert Kirkman’s comics. More than six spin-off series of TWD have already been released, and while many of them have ended, the success of the franchise leaves no doubt that the American network AMC has no plans to stop there.
Scott M. Gimple, the head of The Walking Dead Universe at AMC, still has several ideas in mind for the future of the franchise. Let’s take a look at the series that are officially planned. While TWD: The Ones Who Live (the spin-off about Rick and Michonne) was a mini-series not intended to have a sequel, other shows are set to continue for the long term.
What Are the Upcoming The Walking Dead Series?
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol (Season 2)
After a first season showing Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) finding his way through a post-apocalyptic France, the series TWD: Daryl Dixon will soon return for a second season titled The Book of Carol, signaling the return of another main character in the franchise: Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride).
The story will pick up right where season 1 left off, with Daryl struggling to come to terms with his choice to stay in France, while Carol fights to find him.
It is already confirmed that TWD: Daryl Dixon won’t end with this second season, as the show was renewed for a third season, which will take place in Spain, even before season 2 began.
TWD: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol is available to watch on AMC and AMC+.
The Walking Dead: Dead City (Season 2)
Another spin-off of TWD focused on main characters from the original series, Dead City follows Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) as they navigate the zombie-infested jungle of New York City, searching for Maggie’s kidnapped son.
Launched in June 2023 on AMC, the series is set to return in 2025 with a second season, continuing the journey of this unlikely duo in Manhattan and introducing some new faces to the cast.
TWD: Dead City Season 2 will be available on AMC and AMC+. AMC+ subscribers can often watch episodes earlier than they air on the AMC cable channel, so this streaming service is a good option for early access.
The release date for Season 2 is expected in 2025, though AMC has not yet announced the exact date.
More Tales from The Walking Dead Universe
In 2022, AMC launched an anthology series consisting of six episodes that told new stories set in TWDU. This series, titled Tales of the Walking Dead, has not been officially renewed for another season, although Gimple expressed in January 2023 to Collider that he remained hopeful about producing new episodes.
However, in April 2023, AMC announced a short-format series tentatively titled More Tales from TWDU. Little information has been released about the project since then, but it seems the idea is to tell new stories set in this universe, potentially linking its different parts.
More Tales from TWDU would be a series for AMC’s digital platform, AMC’s Content Room, and it does not yet have a release date.
